Self Assessment of Social Media Presence

Even for a Chinese American, I’m pretty unpopular. I deleted my Facebook over a year ago. My Instagram isn’t popping. I only have 30 followers. I often don’t feel like following people back so after a while they unfollow me. My old youtube channel had 20 or so subscribers, but I lost it because it was a brand channel from my high school gmail so there was a time limit I could have it.

I have an Ebay account. I might sell a thing or two a year like books or whatnot. I don’t visit my linkedin very often, but I’m starting to connect with people more now. I should take a picture of myself in formal wear to seem professional I guess.

Informational Interview

Questions

  1. Why did you pick math major?
  2. How long were you preparing for your profession?
  3. What do you like about this profession?

Interviewing Classmate: Mutasim Mim

  1. I decided to study Mathematics very early, beginning high school. I chose to study Mathematics because I liked solve problems, and liked the rigorous nature of pure mathematics. I would like to be a either a Mathematician working at a research university, or a Research Scientist at some tech company.
  2. Throughout my middle and high school, I have had a very strong foundation in Mathematics- specially through Math Competitions. I would describe all those experiences as training for my future profession as well.
  3. Both as a Mathematician and a Research Scientist, I will be working on new, original problems. Generally, Mathematical research involves combining knowledge from various fields of Mathematics along with ingenious thinking. I like this aspect of creating new knowledge and extending the frontiers of our understanding of both the physical and abstract worlds. Most importantly, I deeply respect Mathematicians and Scientists, and I would consider it a great honor to be working as one.
  4. No comments.

Interviewing Classmate: Willy Machuca

  1. I decided to become a math major because I really enjoying doing mathematics. I also became a math major since it provides a good challenge every now and again.  I enjoy doing a multitude of math problems, even the tough ones, because of the feeling of accomplishment that I get when I know I got the right answer.  The profession that I would like to get into is Data Science or something to do with numerical analysis.
  2. For a profession in Data Science, I’ve been preparing for about 2 years.  For a profession involving Numerical Analysis, I would say about 6 years.
  3. In all honesty, I would enjoy being a data scientist because it tends to be a very lucrative occupation.  As for a profession involving numerical analysis, I just enjoy doing math and getting paid to do math is pretty much a done deal for me.
  4. In my experience its a bit of both.  Undergraduate studies are helpful, especially electives from my major because it takes what I learned in my theoretical courses and applies certain mathematical characteristics onto real-world problems.  On the other hand, Undergraduate studies can be a stepping stone for the future because there are plenty of unnecessary courses that one needs to take in order to graduate.  What does a math major need to study music for?

Cover Letter

Dear (company name)

I’m a mathematics major and English minor at St. Johns. I’ll be graduating this year. I’m interested in accounting and writing on the side. I’ve been in the math club in middle school to college. I feel passionate doing math and thinking about math concepts. I try to use math whenever there’s a practical real world application in doing so.

I don’t have much for work experience, but I look forward to opportunities to acquiring more. I’ve done community service for Newtown church and had a summer internship at Queens Fencing Club and was a temp worker at Apex Logistics. I’ve learned to use a program called Quick Books when tasked to record payments by my boss. I’ve taken courses to run a blog and have some experience with posting on social media for a business.

I think my skill set in (math or writing) is well suited for your company so I hope to hear from you soon! (email: william.zhou16@stjohns.edu)

Best Regards

William Zhou

Selfies

I took the selfie of the food I cooked 3 years ago to show I had some traits to live on my own as an adult should be able to do. Partially it was to impress and motivate my peers for adulthood as well.

The second picture is a lazy one. I didn’t shave and there’s a lint roller in the background. That smile is pretty emotionless I do admit.

The third picture is equally as lazy as the second and also in my room (why go outside when there’s that virus outside is my excuse). I got a haircut for $4 plus a tip of $3.20 near Costco. Short haircuts represent the time I want to save from going again.

Work Reflection

I want to have a job that’s challenging and stimulating. Something will that make me look forward to waking up in the morning. I probably can’t get my dream job right away so I have to be open to other jobs. Career paths aren’t always straightforward for everyone especially if you want something unusual.

It’s also good to recognize if the opportunities that comes my way are rare and I should be more inclined to do something that most people don’t get to do. Spending money is fun and I’ll need to pay my bills so money is always something to consider. But I also want to be fulfilled and have a good mental health. So I guess I would have to balance rarity of the job, joy from the job and the pay. Definitely if you love your job, you would try to overcome any challenge that comes up.

Leaving a legacy would be nice and make my life feel meaningful.

Lifeview Reflection

I chose this class because I’m interested in having the option to make a living on my writing. Also I’ve never taken an online class and I like trying something I hear other people have done at least once. The meaning of life should be living the way you want to live. Fulfilling and not too stressful.

Personally, my family wouldn’t understand my writing, well, my parents at least because of the language barrier. I think my writing fits in more with people of my generation and fellow Americans.

The concept of good and evil varies from person to person, but there are some universals that everyone can agree on like Hitler is bad and Gandhi is good.

I don’t feel that believing in anything divine will make a difference in life, but if it brings people comfort, I have no qualms with it. If it brings societal impracticality and harm to minority groups, I definitely have a problem with it.

Conflict in life usually pushes us forward and are inevitable. We should always strive to fight for justice and bring joy for those who feel sorrow although we shouldn’t give false hope. I wish for my writing to help people live better lives or do better than what they were doing before.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
